When should continuous or slug treatment be selected?

Continuous treatment feeds chemical while flow is available. A slug treatment provides periodic exposure at a defined concentration and contact time. Both need a microbial baseline and representative sample locations; a calendar frequency without sample evidence does not prove control.

Do not mix two chemicals merely because both are water soluble. Review the biocide against the corrosion inhibitor, scale inhibitor, oxygen scavenger, demulsifier, elastomers, metals, and downstream process before a trial.

What evidence makes a biocide trial acceptable?

The trial needs an agreed control period, sample locations, method, schedule, and decision limits. Record actual pump output or slug volume, contact time, flow changes, other chemicals, temperature, and cleaning events. Compare microbial results with the baseline using the same method and interpret them alongside biofilm, H2S, corrosion, filters or deposits, and operating conditions.

Is a weekly slug always the better programme?

No. A calendar frequency does not guarantee contact time or system coverage. Mode and frequency should follow volume, flow, demand, dead legs, microbial baseline, circulation capability, disposal risk, and rebound evidence.
