Ultrafiltration

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a low-pressure membrane filtration technology used to remove suspended solids, colloids, microorganisms, and fine particles from raw water or process water. In industrial water treatment systems, UF is commonly installed as pretreatment before Reverse Osmosis (RO), as polishing after biological treatment, or as a primary barrier when low turbidity and stable outlet quality are required.

Ultrafiltration Applications

Ultrafiltration systems can be used for:

  • Pretreatment before RO or demineralizer systems to reduce turbidity, SDI, and fouling load.
  • Treatment of surface water, river water, groundwater, or industrial raw water with fluctuating fine solids.
  • Polishing after clarifiers, multimedia filters, DAF, MBR, or biological treatment processes.
  • Reuse of treated wastewater for utilities, cooling tower make-up, washing, or selected process water duties.
  • Reduction of bacteria and suspended solids without excessive coagulant dosing.
  • Modular skid systems for small to large capacity plants, either as standalone units or as part of a complete water treatment package.

Main UF System Components

A reliable UF system depends on more than the membrane modules. Long-term performance is shaped by pretreatment, instrumentation, hydraulic design, and the control of backwash and chemical cleaning.

Common components include:

  • Feed pump and strainer to stabilize inlet flow and protect the membrane from large particles.
  • Hollow fiber UF membrane modules or other membrane configurations suited to the application.
  • Automatic valves, flow meters, pressure gauges, pressure transmitters, and control panel.
  • Upstream filtration such as multimedia filter, disc filter, or cartridge filter when feed water needs additional protection.
  • Backwash system, air scouring, chemical enhanced backwash, and CIP facilities to recover membrane performance.
  • Piping, skid, drain, reject, and instrumentation arranged to match the site layout.

Design Factors

Before selecting a UF configuration, several technical parameters should be evaluated:

  1. Feed water quality: turbidity, TSS, SDI, COD, color, oil and grease, iron, manganese, and biological growth potential.
  2. Outlet quality target: low turbidity, RO membrane protection, water reuse, or downstream process requirements.
  3. Flux and recovery: flux selection must match the feed water profile so backwash and cleaning frequency remain controlled.
  4. Upstream pretreatment: high-solids feed water may require a clarifier, DAF, coagulation, or multimedia filtration before UF.
  5. Cleaning strategy: fouling type determines the need for backwash, chemical enhanced backwash, acid CIP, alkaline CIP, or periodic disinfection.
  6. Operation and maintenance: module access, spare parts, instrumentation, alarms, and cleaning procedures should be designed from the start.
