BETAGARD 4008 is a series of Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) products used as coagulant agents or sludge conditioners in liquid-solid separation processes. This product is used specifically in water treatment and wastewater treatment to reduce suspended solids (turbidity), color, as well as other contaminants such as natural organic matter from surface water, collodial particles, salt and clay.

Typical Applications

  • Drinking Water Treatment Plants (IPAM / PDAM) — Liquid PAC (BETAGARD 4008/4010/4012) is used as the primary coagulant in the coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation process to remove turbidity, colour, and TSS from river or lake water before sand filtration and disinfection.
  • Industrial Wastewater Treatment — PAC agglomerates TSS, dissolved heavy metals, and phosphorus from textile, paper, and electroplating industry effluent to meet discharge standards before biological processes or direct release to water bodies.
  • Pulp and Paper Industry — PAC powder (BETAGARD 4031/4033) is applied in white water treatment systems to remove fine fibres and filler from recycled process water.
  • Wastewater with High Phosphorus Loading — PAC is effective as a chemical phosphorus precipitation agent (Chemical Phosphorus Removal / CPR) at municipal and food industry WWTPs to meet total phosphorus standards of < 1 mg/L.
  • Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) Units — PAC dosing upstream of the DAF saturation tank improves formation of fine flocs more easily captured by microbubbles, increasing TSS and FOG separation efficiency.
  • Sludge Management (Sludge Conditioning) — PAC as a sludge conditioner improves sludge drainability before filter press or centrifuge, reducing polymer usage and accelerating the dewatering process.

Compatible Products

  • Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) — PAC and DAF work synergistically: PAC flocculates fine particles and oils in the pre-conditioning tank, then DAF efficiently floats those flocs using dissolved air microbubbles.
  • Betaqua Ultrafiltration — Low-dose PAC upstream of UF helps reduce membrane fouling from organic colloids, extending backwash intervals and overall membrane service life.
  • Moving Bed Bioreactors (MBBR) — In combined treatment systems, PAC is applied at the physico-chemical stage before MBBR to remove coarse TSS and colloidal solids that can interfere with biofilm performance.

Installation Context

BETAGARD PAC Series is available in liquid form (220 kg drums or 1,200 kg flexitanks) and powder form (25 kg bags). For IPAM installations, liquid PAC is typically stored in ground-level PE tanks of 5-20 m³ capacity with an anti-settling agitator, and dosed using diaphragm or peristaltic dosing pumps with flow-proportional control relative to water production rate. The optimum dosage is determined through laboratory jar testing — typically 5-30 mg/L for moderately turbid river water and up to 80 mg/L for very turbid river water. For PAC powder, a dissolving tank with agitator is required before the dosing tank.
