What Is a Pour Point Depressant?

A pour point depressant (PPD) is a chemical that lowers the minimum temperature at which oil can still flow. It modifies wax-crystal growth and structure so the crystals are less likely to form a rigid network that increases viscosity or restricts the flow line.

Pour point depressant and paraffin dispersant describe different functions. A PPD focuses on lowering pour point and modifying wax crystals, while a paraffin dispersant helps keep paraffin particles suspended in the oil and reduces their adhesion to pipeline surfaces. BETAFLOW 9500 Series is a crude-oil pour point depressant that also helps disperse paraffin deposits into the produced oil when applied continuously. The formulation supports lower pour point, inhibition of paraffin formation, and reduced wax deposition in production systems.

Is “pour point dispersant” the correct term?

The standard technical term is pour point depressant because its primary function is to lower pour point. When a product also disperses wax or paraffin, that function is more accurately described as a paraffin dispersant.

Is a pour point depressant the same as a wax dissolver?

No. A pour point depressant modifies wax crystallization and maintains crude-oil mobility, while a wax dissolver is used to dissolve deposits that have already formed. Program selection depends on deposit conditions and the treatment objective.
