If two candidates reach the same effluent quality, choose the one that remains stable on normal and peak-load samples, not the one that looks clearest in a single beaker. For DAF or sludge applications, continue testing with sludge treatment so underflow, cake, and filtrate are included.

BETAGARD 4050

ORGANIC COAGULANT

BETAGARD 4050 is a concentrated liquid of low molecular weight, cationic polydiallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride or POLYDADMAC which functions effectively as primary coagulant or coagulant aid in water or wastewater clarification. It is chlorine-resistant and effective over a wide pH range, and can substitute or be used in conjunction with inorganic primary coagulants such as alum and ferric salts. The maximum recommended concentration of BETAGARD 4050 in the treatment of potable water is 20 ppm. BETAGARD 4050 is also recommended for other liquid-solids separation processes, such as :

What is the difference between PAC, ACH, and organic coagulants?

PAC on this page includes polyaluminum chloride products such as BETAGARD 4008, 4010, 4012, 4017, 4031, and 4033. ACH includes aluminum chlorohydrate products such as BETAGARD 4040, 4041, 4044, and 4045. Organic coagulants such as BETAGARD 4050 are based on POLYDADMAC and are used as a primary coagulant or coagulant aid for clarification, DAF, filtration, centrifugation, and dewatering.

Can coagulant dosage be selected directly from the product table?

No. The product tables help identify physical form, pH, active content, and packaging, but the actual dosage should be determined through a tube test or jar test in the laboratory and confirmed through a plant trial. pH, alkalinity, turbidity, TSS, color, oil and grease, flow rate, and sludge characteristics should be prepared before a dosage recommendation is made.

When should a plant contact Beta for a coagulation program review?

Contact Beta when clarification, DAF, filtration, or sedimentation is unstable; turbidity, TSS, colour, or oil remains high; flocs break; chemical use rises; or sludge is difficult to separate. A comparable jar test uses an actual sample, recorded initial pH, a fixed injection sequence, and the same mixing and settling times for every dose.
