How should MBBR chips be selected for a WWTP?
MBBR chip selection should start from the process objective, not the media shape alone. Media for BOD capacity increase, nitrification, or an old-WWTP retrofit needs different load, oxygen, hydraulic, retention-screen, and downstream-solids evidence.

RFQ and acceptance-test data
Send average and peak flow, influent analysis, effluent target, reactor drawings, aeration data, screen plan, downstream process, sludge-wasting method, and operating schedule. For a trial, agree the load parameters, stabilisation period, sampling points, and response if ammonia or COD does not fall to target.

MBBR chips FAQs
Is more carrier media always better?
No. Excessive fill ratio can disrupt mixing, aeration, media retention, and maintenance access. Capacity should be calculated from the process load and checked against the reactor condition.
Do MBBR chips replace a clarifier?
No. MBBR grows biofilm on carriers, but detached biological solids still need downstream separation such as a clarifier, DAF, or filtration according to the design.
What proof should be requested after start-up?
Ask for influent load records, DO, pH, temperature, ammonia or COD, outlet TSS, media condition, blower alarms, and laboratory trends during the stable-test period.
