Strainer in water treatment is a coarse filter tool that functions to filter large solid particles from the water flow before the water enters the next processing stage.
Here’s a more complete explanation 👇
Strainer Function
Strainer functions to:
- Filter out large solid impurities such as leaves, twigs, coarse sand, plastic, mud, and fibers.
- Protect subsequent equipment such as pumps, valves, fine filters, or membranes from becoming clogged or damaged.
- Maintain the efficiency of the water treatment system, as it prevents pressure drop and mechanical damage to the system.
Working Principle
Water containing impurities is passed through a sieve (mesh or screen) inside the strainer.
- Solid particles will be retained on the surface of the filter.
- Clean water will come out to the next process.
- Strainers need to be cleaned regularly to prevent clogging.
Types of Strainers
- Basket Strainer
Used in large pipes; basket-shaped to collect dirt.
Suitable for large flow systems and easy to remove for cleaning. - Y-Strainer
Shaped like the letter “Y”; commonly used in high pressure piping systems.
More compact and often used for industrial water or cooling systems. - T-Strainer
Shaped like the letter “T”; usually used in systems that require easy maintenance and high efficiency.
Application in Water Treatment
Strainers are usually installed at:
- The initial stage (intake), before the water enters the pump.
- Before fine filters or main treatment units, such as sand filters or membrane systems.
- In circulation systems, to prevent clogging of components.
Maintenance
- Strainers must be cleaned regularly to avoid a decrease in water discharge.
- In automated systems, self-cleaning strainers can be used which wash themselves using backwash pressure.
